Laos II - quer durch (15.12.-19.12.)

Die Wetterfee ist uns heute nicht hold. Wir sind aber so übermüdet von den Strapazen, dass wir sowieso keine Lust drauf haben, das neue Getriebe einzubauen. David bereitet aber so einiges vor: Das Getriebeöl wird abgelassen, Schrauben gelockert und das Werkzeug bereitgelegt.

The weather is very bad today, but it doesn't matter since we are so tired from the trip down to Vientiane that we are not in the mood for mechanical work. Still, David at least prepares some things: the transmission oil is drained, he looses the screws and sets his tools ready.

Motiviert starten wir in den Tag. Das alte Getriebe ist schnell ausgebaut. Mit zwei Zurrgurten wollen wir das 55kg schwere Teil hochheben. Meine Aufgabe ist dabei, die Balance zu halten und zu kontrollieren, ob alles am richtigen Ort ist. David muss es dann befestigen und nach drei Stunden ist die Arbeit vollbracht! Leider konnten wir nirgends das passende Getriebeöl finden und so muss leider bis Thailand ein dickflüssigeres herhalten.

We start the day fairly motivated. The old gearbox is removed rather quickly. With two ratchet straps we lift the 55kg heavy part. My job is to keep the balance and to check whether everything is in the right place. David then has to fix the screws and after 3 hours the work is finally done! Unfortunately, we cannot find the right transmission oil and so we have to look for it in Thailand.

Gespannt wie ein Drahtseil brechen wir zur Probefahrt an. Das Getriebe klingt einwandfrei und auch das Schaltproblem ist wie weggezaubert. Das alte Getriebe können wir noch für €7 verkaufen und wir nutzen gleich die Motivation des Tages, um unsere Gasflaschen befüllen zu lassen. Leider drehen sich laotische Gewinde in die andere Richtung und so ist zunächst Denkarbeit angebracht. Mit Hilfe der verschiedenen Gewindeaufsätze, eines Schlauchs und zahlreicher Rohrschellen klappt es aber dann doch und für €13 bekommen wir nicht nur 12kg Gas, sondern auch noch den Schlauch inklusive Adapter.

Excited and nervous at the same time we set off for our test drive. The transmission sounds just as it should and also the problem with the shifting of the gears is gone. We are even able to sell the old gearbox for €7. Since we are overjoyed we use our motivation of the day and re-fill our gas bottles. Unfortunately, Laotian threads turn in the other direction and so mental work is initially attached. With the help of the various thread attachments, a hose and pipe clamps it eventually works and for €13 we get 12kg of gas, the hose and a fitting adapter.

Ach, ist es schön, wieder mobil zu sein! Nach knapp fünf Wochen in Luang Prabang fällt uns der Abschied nicht wirklich schwer. Klar, das Städchen ist wirklich reizend, doch nach drei Tagen hat man bereits jede Ecke genauestens erkundet.

Nun sehen wir endlich auch die Straße, welche die Busfahrer mit dezenten 80 km/h bezwungen haben, bei Tageslicht. Oh, Mann, das sind richtige Draufgänger, denn schneller als 50 km/h wagen wir uns nicht zu fahren. Bei Vankhi finden wir ein schönes Plätzchen abseits der Straße und nichts ist herrlicher als die selbstgekochten Spaghetti!

Oh, it's so nice being back on the road again! After nearly 5 weeks in Luang Prabang it is not hard to say good-bye. Of course, this little town is really lovely, but after 3 days you definitely have explored every corner of it!

Now, finally, we also see the road which the bus drivers have conquered with 80 km/h during nighttime. Those guys are real daredevils, because we do not dare to drive faster than 50 km/h in broad daylight! In Vankhi we find a nice spot off the road and nothing is more glorious than home-cooked spaghetti!

Sobald man die Passstraßen hinter sich gelassen hat, sind die Straßen in Laos eigentlich recht gut. Gegen Mittag treffen wir an der Thai-Lao-Friendship-Bridge I ein. Die Ausreise geht sehr rasch, doch ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob die Customs-Chefin den Carnet-Abschnitt auch in ihren Computer übertragen wird. Wir haben jedoch ihren Stempel mit Name und Unterschrift und das sollte für uns reichen.

Once you have left the mountain passes behind you, the roads in Laos are actually pretty good. Around noon we arrive at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge I. The check-out is proceeded quite fast, but I'm not sure if the Customs boss has noted down the details from the Carnet into the computer. However, she has stamped our export slips and noted down her name and signed it, which is all we need.
