Myanmar (22.10.-28.10.)

Myanmar (22.10.-28.10.)

Tag 196, 22.10.2013 – Von Moreh bis Kalay

km 182628

Klingt gut!

Day 196, 22 October 2013 – From Moreh to Kalay

km 182628

Today is the day: we are traveling into Myanmar! By 10 o’clock we have to meet with Tin, our agent, at the Ironbridge. As early as 8 o’clock in the morning we take leave from the gas station. Previously, we meet Detlef and Willi on their Suzuki motorcycles, who are going through Myanmar with us.

The Indian borders are really maddening! It takes more than 4 hours to get our carnets stamped. Tin then ensures that the passports are stamped at both Indian as well as Myanmar Immigration. The entry into Myanmar is not a problem at all. In Tamu, just after the border we get very good Myanmar food and we get to know our fellow travelers: 52 Malayans, Chinese and Singapore people who want to travel in their luxury cars through Myanmar within 3 days.

After the first few kilometers, we lose the group and arrive relatively late in Kalay. Tin therefore organizes an agent for the next day, so Olivia, Olivier, Helena, Pavel, Detlef, Willi, David and I are the new ‘special-because-ultra-slow-’group. Sounds good!

Tag 197, 23.10.2013 – Von Kalay bis Wedaung

km 182768

Day 197, 23 October 2013 – From Kalay to Wedaung

km 182768

Myanmar has a lot to offer: magnificent landscapes, friendly people and good food. Just a shame that building mountain roads is not one of their strengths. But one has to be fair - the rainy season bears its pitfalls and everyone who drives over the passes in this season should expect to get stuck in the mud. Just as we do. At 8 o’clock in the evening we finally managed the first pass and 2 others separate us from our destination. Since it is not realistic that we can reach Pagan today, we spontaneously decide to sleep atop the first pass. For Detlef and Willi the guest beds are made ready in the other two vehicles and so we are all well accommodated.

Htong, our agent is really trying to keep us happy. But this is no problem, because there is beer. Good beer. Myanmar Beer. He orders food and tells us everything we want to know about his culture. Thus, the journey through the mud has paid off already.

Tag 198, 24.10.2013 – Von Wedaung bis Mintainbing

km 182969

Day 198, 24 October 2013 – From Wedaung to Mintainbing

km 182969

The mudslinging continues: stuck trucks and bus passengers who are sleeping in their coaches since 3 days. Htong often has to drive ahead of us and check if we are able to drive on or not. Step by step we work our way up. Not only for the two motorcycles but also for us it becomes more and more difficult. While the other two vehicles have little problems getting up the muddy hills, Bluff comes to its limits – even in the crawling gears.

Atop the pass, the vehicles park in both directions. Noone can move anymore for the next two hours. In addition, the clutch of Willis motorcycle is finally broken and so we have to put my scooter inside the car, while his bike is strapped to the scooter stand. At 9 o’clock in the evening we arrive in a village where we can spend the night. So now we haven’t even arrived at yesterday’s destination!

Tag 199, 25.10.2013 – Von Mintainbing bis Mandalay

km 182993

Day 199, 25 October 2013 – From Mintainbing to Mandalay

km 182993

After the pass we can proceed fairly quickly. The route was changed slightly and so our next destination is Mandalay. The hotel is right in the city center and it takes us almost 2 hours to get there. Therefore, we only arrive at around 10:30 p.m. in our rooms and directly fall asleep.

Tag 200, 26.10.2013 – Von Mandalay bis Pynmana

km 183245

Day 200, 26 October 2013 – From Mandalay to Pynmana

km 183245

Today we get bad news served with a delicious breakfast: Htong, who had abdominal pain for days, drives back home and instead we get a new agent. We believe, however, that Tin has fired him. Too bad, because he was a very likeable person and a brilliant agent.

The new guide, unfortunately, is the exact opposite. When it starts to rain heavily we signal him that Detlef has to stop. Either he does not see it or he does not want to see it – he just drives on. It’s getting dark already, so it takes some time to find his car again. The agent did not think it appropriate to wait for us at intersections and so we had to find the way ourselves.

When we finally arrive at the hotel the new agent has to clarify whether we have to pay for the rooms ourselves, because this is not one of Mr Tin's partner hotels. Mr Tin assures us that he is of cause paying the bill. Just in case David and I decide to sleep in the car. At night, David unfortunately has to throw up and I also don’t feel quite well. Apparently, we have eaten something bad.

Tag 201, 27.10.2013 – Von Pynmana bis Myawaddy

km 183541

Day 201, 27 October 2013 – From Pynmana to Myawaddy

km 183541

Mr Tin resumes the throne! Yesterday night, he has already safely returned from the Thai border and today it is our turn. Since the pass road towards the border is very narrow it can only be used every other day. So we have about 600 km of drive ahead of us today! Detlef's motorcycle is packed onto a pick up and off we go.

The whole thing is very stressful, but this time the roads are pretty good – well, in the beginning at least. At 8 o’clock in the evening we arrive at the pass. Although driving such roads in the dark is really dangerous, this is our only option. Just like an autopilot David is driving while I’m like a computer telling him where the road ends on my side. At around 1:30 o’clock in the morning we arrive at our hotel in Myawaddy and agree with Mr Tin that we can sleep until 10 o’clock.
