Thailand II - Die Mitte (Bangkok) (19.12.2013-1.1.2014)

Thailand II - The Middle (Bangkok) (19.12.2013-1.1.2014)

Tag 254, 19.12.2013 – Von Vankhi nach Phao (Thailand)

km 186623

Jahrhundert!

Day 254, 19 December 2013 – From Vankhi to Phao (Thailand)

km 186623

The entry into Thailand is also no problem. We get a 15 days visa on arrival and again the Carnet is stamped. In addition, we get the export documents for our vehicles, which we have to hand in when we are leaving Thailand. For € 30 we buy an insurance for Thailand which is valid for one year, because the country has become so rich that you can certainly not simply pay when you cause an accident.

Our place for the night is a gas station. There are a 7-eleven, restaurants, clothing stores, clean toilets and wifi. Wow, we're finally back in the 21th century!

Tag 255, 20.12.2013 – Von Phao bis Bang Saen

km 187059

Day 255, 20 December 2013 – From Phao to Bang Saen

km 187059

We want to go to the sea! Approximately 50km south of Bangkok is the first beach where you can swim. A sunset at the beach is always something very special and so we are back in our holiday mood.

Tag 256, 21.12.2013 – Von Bang Saen nach Bangkok

km 187427

Day 256, 21 December 2013 – From Bang Saen to Bangkok

km 187427

Brr, icy wind is blowing around our noses. We had actually planned to stay one more night at the beach, but it is not possible to swim due to the cold weather! So we decide to go to Bangkok a bit earlier. Thanks to our navigator system we find the guest house, which has a large parking lot, very fast. However, before we get there the metaphorical clouds begin to darken: the car makes horrible noises. Without a doubt, the drumming sounds can only be located in the 4x4 gearbox. That's not a good sign, because if there is one LT spare part which you cannot get easily, it is exactly that one. Klaus has to help us again and we even send him a video recording of the grinding noise. His prognosis could not be any worse.

But at least we are in Bangkok :)

Tag 257, 22.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Doch, was sehen wir?

Day 257, 22 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

We re-visit all the places we have already been to years ago: Siam Square convinces everyone with its huge, luxurious shopping centers where you can get everything your heart desires. But what do we see? The Mob! (That's how the protesters are called in Bangkok). However, the gathering is more like a folk festival with live music, food stalls and loads of Chinese goods.

In the evening we enjoy sushi and sashimi at Fuji Restaurant. The raw fish melts like butter on our tongues, and despite the hefty price as it is always an experience.

Tag 258, 23.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Heute landet Samy endlich in Bangkok.

Day 258, 23 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today Samy finally arrives in Bangkok. It is amazing how time flies! Before we leave for the airport we have a quick lunch on the roadside. Hard to believe, but as we are sitting there enjoying our delicious fried rice in a city inhabited by millions and millions of people we see Markus, our Pakistan-fellow and his girlfriend Sonja. They join us immediately and there is much to talk. Unfortunately, we have to leave, but we make an appointment for the evening.

Samy's plane lands on time at 3 o'clock. At the airport we finally also get to know Minty, Patty's sister and Samy's girlfriend. We drop the two off in front of the hotel and then make our way to our guesthouse. Then we go for a drink with Sonja and Markus and later Samy and Minty also join us. So the reunion cannot be more perfect! Until the early morning hours we sit with Sonja and Markus next to the river and enjoy life.

Tag 259, 24.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 259, 24 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Christmas is coming! For this evening, we were thinking about something very special. Before that however, we are allowed to unwrap our gifts: Pittl Bacon, Nada and Tara's deer sausages, Leachnhof Schnaps, Hildegard's Christmas cookies, T-shirts and a calendar - the list is endless. Bluffi gets a new diesel filter and two oil filters, which he sorely needed.

At half past 5, we meet up with Sonja and Markus and together we drive to the Baiyoke Tower. There, a caravan buffet dinner is awaiting us on the 79th Floor with sushi, spring rolls, Peking duck, steak, Crêpes Susette, and much more. Sonja and I count 21 different courses and we really have to loosen our belts! We close a perfect evening off with a brilliant view of night-time Bangkok from the moving panorama platform on the 82nd floor.

Tag 260, 25.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 260, 25 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today, Sonja, Markus, Minty and Samy visit us in our guesthouse. Our Christmas gifts from home serve as a snack after the splendid Christmas eve: There is bacon, deer sausages and cookies.

Tag 261, 26.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 261, 26 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today, Sonja flies to Bali early in the morning, where she spends her first few days in a surf camp before Markus is joining her. We will really miss her, because even though we have only met three days ago, she has a special place in our hearts :)

In the evening, Markus catches his bus for Laos, from where he is traveling onwards to Vietnam, where he has arranged to meet with friends. But before that the three of us are meeting up with Minty and Samy in Lumpini Park.

Tag 262, 27.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 262, 27 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today we have to go to the Austrian Embassy. The first appointment on 24.12. has not worked out the way we wanted it, but today everything seems to go smoothly. Although we have previously explained to the secretary that we cannot apply for a second passport in Austria because we are here with our car, which seems to be an inexplicable mystery to him, it somehow works out after all.

At the embassy we meet a couple from Germany (he) and Austria (she) who really had bad luck: Actually they should have been flying to Vienna yesterday, but just as they were on the way to their hotel, a passing motorbike driver rips away her handbag, in which she was keeping both passports. Now they need an emergency passport. At the German embassy, everything was proceeded very quickly - within 10 minutes the guy had his new cream-colored travel document in his hands. Austria is well known for its bureaucratic jungle, which is why it has taken them a few hours until they can make their way to the airport.

After we have submitted our fingerprints and payed €70 per person, our task for today is done.

Tag 263-264, 28.-29.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 263-264, 28-29 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

The next day we spend with Minty and Samy: We go shopping, take a walk through the city and eat delicious, authentic Thai food. We get a first-hand experience of Thai culture thanks to Minty, which somehow differs from what we thought to be Thai. The Thai-food we always had is very different from what Minty introduces us to. And now we also learn that the concept of spiciness can vary :)

Tag 265, 30.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 265, 30 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today, we are awakened by an Upper Austrian dialect: Michael has spent the last three months in India and Nepal, which is why we have many things in common. He wants to travel through South East Asia in the coming months before he makes his way to New Zealand, where he first wants to improve his travel fund by working.

Tag 266, 31.12.2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 266, 31 December 2013 – Bangkok

km 187536

Our New Year's Eve programme is tight: Joined by Michael, we first take a boat to Asiatique – an amusement park that was actually built for tourists, but hardly any 'long-nose' is to be found in the Thai turmoil. There, Samy and Minty show us their favourite restaurant that really knocks our socks off (you can see that we are slowly moving from a culture to a culinary trip). For midnight we want to enjoy the fireworks at Central World, but the tangle is too much for us and so we start searching for a comfy rooftop bar, which is very, very difficult at New Year's Eve. Centara Grand Hotel is our refuge - although their bar is only located on the 23rd floor, the rest on the sofas is all we need. The only drawback is that a bottle of water costs more than a cocktail!

Unfortunately, the fireworks seem to go wrong, because after 3 minutes everything is already over. We wait a little until the mass of people moves away from the square and then suddenly the firework starts again. This time it's more splendid, but we are nevertheless disappointed.

Afterwards we go to the RCA, the most famous club area in Bangkok. I immediately get talked up by a ladyboy, but I am not quite sure why. Nevertheless, a few good photos are taken :)

Tag 267, 1.1.2014 – Bangkok

km 187536

Day 267, 1 January 2014 – Bangkok

km 187536

Today we use the good Internet connection to skype with our loved ones at home. Apparently not much has changed and everything is the same. We are very surprised at how well Patty speaks German, although she has only been learning it for 3 months. And her Tyrolean accent is really cute :)
